If you have a STIHL chainsaw you’ll notice that STIHL chainsaw guide bars have quite unique names; Rollomatic, Duromatic and more! But what do these names actually mean? And what’s the difference between a Rollomatic E and a Rollomatic ES, for example? In this blog, we’re going to take a deep dive into STIHL’s extensive range of chainsaw guide bars so you have a better understanding of what makes your guide bar unique and why it’s suitable for your STIHL chainsaw or pruner.
Before we begin, let’s look into what the guide bar actually does for the tool. Constructed from high quality, highly resistant chrome molybdenum steel, the chainsaw guide bar’s role is to guide the saw chain precisely over what you are cutting with minimal friction loss. Alongside the sprocket and the saw chain, the guide bar translates the engine power of the chainsaw into cutting performance. STIHL’s range of guide bars cover the whole spectrum of cutting jobs; whether that’s harvesting heavy logs, processing firewood, carving or just pruning smaller branches.
STIHL Rollomatic E, Rollomatic E Mini & Rollomatic ES guide bars
One of the most widely used chainsaw guide bars in STIHL’s range is the Rollomatic E range. These guide bars have a low weight and are highly stable, making them a great “standard” for STIHL chainsaws.
STIHL Rollomatic E Guide Bar
The first version is the Rollomatic E. This guide bar appears on a wide variety of chainsaws for a range of uses, including domestic chainsaws such as the STIHL MS 180, agricultural chainsaws such as the MS 291 and professional forestry chainsaws such as the MS 362. This guide bar can be fitted with a 3/8”, 3/8” P or .325” chainsaw chain and is available in 12” – 25” versions.
STIHL Rollomatic E Mini Guide Bar
Next is the Rollomatic E Mini guide bar. This chainsaw guide bar is narrower and lighter than the regular Rollomatic E and is found on STIHL’s smaller chainsaws designed for domestic use, such as the STIHL MS 170, MSA 120 and MSE 141. It’s also found on some of our top-handle chainsaws, such as the MS 194 T and MSA 161 T, as it offers a precise cut with a smaller chain which some arborists require for certain pruning jobs. This STIHL guide bar can be fitted with 3/8” Picco Micro Mini 3 or ¼” Picco Micro 3 saw chains and is available in 10” – 14” versions.
STIHL Rollomatic ES Guide Bar
And finally there is the Rollomatic ES guide bar, designed for the highest professional demands on our larger forestry chainsaws, such as the STIHL MS 462, MS 500i and MS 661 chainsaws. This rigid chainsaw guide bar has angled oil holes on the nose for optimum lubrication which is needed when working in forest environments. This STIHL guide bar can be fitted with 3/8” and .404” saw chains and is available in 20” – 36” versions.
STIHL Rollomatic E Light, Rollomatic E Mini Light & Rollomatic ES Light guide bars
Weight is always a key area when it comes to chainsaws, especially if you are going to be using the tool throughout the working day. STIHL’s range of lightweight chainsaw guide bars build on the already successful Rollomatic E guide bars just with a lower weight.
The STIHL Rollomatic E Light has a reduction of up to 30% versus the standard Rollomatic E guide bar thanks to the hollow areas being reinforced by a glass fibre polyamide. Next is the Rollomatic E Mini Light, which offers a weight reduction of up to 25% versus the standard Rollomatic E Mini, making it easier to work with pole pruners or when cutting thinner wood. And the Rollomatic ES Light is made from a special wear-resistant steel which has been hollowed out and made rigid thanks to its outer body. It offers a 30% weight reduction versus the standard Rollomatic ES guide bar.
STIHL Light 04 & Light P04 Guide Bars
Over the last few years you may have noticed some STIHL guide bars have a new graffiti design on the guide bar nose. These Light chainsaw guide bars are part of the new wave of STIHL guide bars and there are currently two available.
The Light 04 guide bar appears exclusively on the STIHL MS 261, MS 271 and MSA 300. It weighs 200g less compared to existing guide bars and has improved balance, meaning users will experience less fatigue when sawing. It’s available in 14” – 20” versions and uses a .325” saw chain.
The Light P04 is a design upgrade of the Rollomatic E Light guide bar and is available exclusively on the STIHL MSA 220 T & TC-O cordless top-handle chainsaws.
STIHL Duromatic E guide bar
When you’re using a professional chainsaw like the STIHL MS 881, you’re also going to need a bigger guide bar. The Duromatic E guide bar is exceptionally hard-wearing and protected by a carbide alloy plating for the toughest forestry jobs. It’s exclusive to the MS 881 petrol chainsaw and available in either 41” or 48”; perfect for the biggest timber.
STIHL Carving E guide bars
If you’re a wood carver, you need the right chainsaw guide bar for your chainsaw in order to make sure you catch all the intricate details of the sculpture you’re carving. Our Carving E guide bar offers low kickback and is lightweight but durable. It also has marks embossed on the guide bar to show the exact depth of the bar nose in the timber, which is especially useful when carving! It’s available in a 12” version for the ¼” or ¼” P chainsaw chain and ideal for all professional or amateur wood carvers out there.
Our STIHL chainsaw guide bars are all made in dedicated STIHL manufacturing plants in Germany, USA and Brazil and new designs go through rigorous testing processes before they are launched. They are also designed to work in perfect harmony with STIHL chainsaws and saw chains. There is more information about choosing the right STIHL saw chain here, but let us know if you have any other questions in the comments below.
Another interesting blog, thanks Stihl GB.
I enjoy the articles that explain more about particular products, especially regarding your excellant chainsaw range and associated bars and chains.
Any chance you could, perhaps, do one on the numbering of Stihl machines, especially chainsaws?
My MS441 for example is in the 70 cc class, and has now been superseded by the MS462, in the 72 cc range.
So just how does your machine numbering work?
I have seen several theories, but I am none the wiser.
Irrespective, thanks again, keep up the good work, and keep on bringing out some top notch forestry saws.
Regards
John
Hello, thanks for the feedback and we’re glad you enjoy the blog posts. The numbers used in the naming system for chainsaws don’t relate to a specification, and there isn’t a rigid naming system in place. Instead, our development team decide if it’s a product improvement (e.g. MS 461 < 462) or a brand new model. We’re steadily implementing a new naming system for all our tools, so keep an eye out for a blog post covering this in the future. Thanks, STIHL GB
Hi I’ve just bought the new ms162. Just wondering can I use a 14 inch bar on this ? (Part number) also have you got a part number for the metal bumper spikes? The ms162 doesn’t come with metal spikes. Thankyou
Hi James, thank you for your comment. Yes, the STIHL MS 162 will run a 14″ bar. The part number for the bumper spike would be 1123-664-0501 but we cannot guarantee it will fit the MS 162 as it is designed for the MS 182. Many thanks, STIHL GB
Hi Stihl GB,
Will a 500i run an es light bar in 28inch the same as it runs a 25 inch es light?
Hi, thanks for your comment. Yes it will – the part number is 3003 000 2038 and you can see more info (plus our Recommended Retail Price) here: https://www.stihl.co.uk/STIHL-Products/Cutting-attachments/Guide-bars/Rollomatic-ES-Light/21904-133439/Rollomatic-ES-Light-For-3-8.aspx
Thanks, STIHL GB
Awesome breakdown of stihls bars. Really informal and helpful. I have a Ms 661m-c and my oiler holes keep plugging on all my bars. To say it’s aggravating would be an understatement. Do you have any suggestions or helpful tips. I’m cutting oaks, maple, cypress, walnut.
Thanks,
Vincent
Hi, thanks for your comment. Sorry to hear you’re having repeated issues with the oiler hole on your bars. Can you contact enquiries@stihl.co.uk and they’ll be able to advise in more detail on a resolution? Thanks, STIHL GB
Hi, I have a question on bar gauge. It seems to be more common to run larger bars with an .050 gauge in the US than UK. Relatively easier to get .050 ES Light bars in US than UK. Arguably, dropping from .063 to .050 on the same pitch is like a power increase, because each saw tooth is cutting narrower chips. Is my logic correct? I’ve managed to source both 36″ and 28″ ES Lights in UK on .050, but can’t get a 25″. Thanks.
Hi, thanks for your message. Assuming you have a chainsaw model between the MS 362 to MS 661 to use with the ES light bar, we unfortunately have to advise that these chainsaws are recommended and approved for use with 3/8″ chain and 1.6mm bar groove combinations. This is specified in the Instruction manual so we cannot recommend moving away from this approved combination. However, we have developed a 1.6mm HEXA chain which offers faster cutting performance with a narrower tooth, but maintains a 1.6mm drive link thickness. More information can be found on HEXA on the STIHL GB YouTube channel or here: https://www.stihl.co.uk/STIHL-Products/Cutting-attachments/Saw-chains/Hexa-saw-chains/2143331-147641/Rapid-Hexa-For-3-8.aspx
Thanks, STIHL GB
I’m in the process of buying an MS 362 C-M with a 20″ bar. I’d like to run a low kickback semi-chisel saw chain on it, something like 36 RM2 72, if i’ve got the code right. What guide bar and saw chain would you recommend? I’m in Australia. Could you include the appropriate codes.
On the subject of codes, the guide bar code contains 11 digits. I know the first 4 are the bar mount size and the last 2 are the bar length. I think digits 8 and 9 refer to the model / type of guide bar. What do the middle 3 digits specify?
Hi, thanks for your question. You were pretty much right; the code is 36 RM3 72. To break this down:
3 – STIHL reference meaning 3/8” pitch
6 – 1.6mm drive link gauge
R – Rapid, this is a larger tooth profile suited to professional machines
M – Micro, indicates the tooth is semi chisel
3 – indicates the low kickback humped drive links
72 – the number of drive links in the chain loop for a 20” guide bar
The part number for this chain loop is 3664 000 0072, as this isn’t a common chain it’s unlikely your STIHL dealer will keep this in stock, but they may be able to order this for you. The ES Light guide bar would be a good choice (part number 3003 000 2021).
For the part number codes, you are correct about the first four and last four – the middle three are just a packaging code for our logistics teams.
Thanks, STIHL GB
I have a Stihl MS180 chainsaw that I bought new about 2015. I recently bought a new bar and chain together for it. I am having trouble fitting it as the fit is very tight and the chain is being shed off the bar. I noticed that the original bar has a rounder nose than the new one (which is very slightly longer in total length).
I refitted the old bar using the new chain and the saw now runs OK. What is happening here?
Hi Michael, thanks for your question. Please could you confirm the part numbers of the new bar and chain you have purchased for your MS 180? These will be 11-digit numbers. We will look into this problem for you.
Thanks, STIHL GB.
Hi, in my work I use and instruct the use of the MS 461 R Rescue Saw..
I am keen to know if there are any plans for a battery powered version or if the guide bar and sliding safety guard could be fitted to any of your current battery powered saws??
Thanks in advance.
Hi, thanks for your comment. I’m afraid not. We have the equivalent of the MS 261 in battery power with the MSA 300 at the moment, but we are always working on new battery tools. Thanks, STIHL GB
I’m looking for a large bar for my 500i to do some milling with a ripping chain. I’m having a heck of a time finding any information about what bar slot/stud size this saw uses as its stock setup. I don’t have the saw available (at the cabin) to verify, and nothing online so far has been able to help me. I’m unsure if this uses a standard 8mm stud, the Stihl large format 12mm stud, or something completely different. Any insights?
Thanks for your comment. Please could I ask you to drop a message to enquiries@stihl.co.uk – your message will be passed to our Technical team who will be able to assist with your question. Thanks, STIHL GB
Hi, I have a “Farm Boss” 038AVS chainsaw, what range of guide bars are suitable for this. I would like something in the 12″-16″ range with a chain suitable for felling. Best regards, Dave.
Hi David, thank you for your comment. You could use either of the following guide bars:
STIHL light 04 16″ – Part number 3003 000 7713
STIHL Rollomatic ES 16″ – Part number 3003 000 8813
The chain needs to have a 3/8″ pitch, 1.6mm drive link gauge and we would recommend the STIHL Rapid Super 3 chain.
The part numbers for this would be – 3626 000 0060 (with light 04 guide bar) or 3623 000 0060 (with Rollomatic ES guide bar)
Many thanks, STIHL GB
Will the MS500i run a 20″ Rollomatic E with the 10 tooth nose sprocket? (Part no. 3003 008 6121)
Hi Mark, no we wouldn’t recommend that bar for the MS 500i. None of the tested and approved combinations have a 10 tooth nose sprocket, and changing the size of the nose sprocket would have an affect on features such as the kickback characteristics, so we couldn’t recommend using it. All the approved bar and chain combinations are listed in the instruction manual on p27 https://web-cdnend-techdoc-tsa-r.azureedge.net/techdoc-documents/DVS_STIHL%2FZBA%2FZBA%2F0458-809-0121-C_ZBA_03_01.pdf, or you can speak to your local STIHL Approved Dealer. Many thanks, STIHL GB
Hi I have a Stihl Duromatic E bar that is exactly 24 inches long. It accepts a 1.6mm gauge and is marked 1.6. It has yellow paint spots and the following marking number 3002 000 9223.
It then has the numbers 49 (written sideways) and 07. 90. I am struggling to find a correct chain for it, any ideas. The bar is non rollermatic so I don’t think pith will be an issue. Bar is brand new so would like to use it.
Hello, thanks for your comment. Any of our chains with a 1.6mm gauge would be fine, but we don’t currently make a loop for that size of bar, so we would definitely suggest visiting your nearest STIHL Approved Dealer and they should be able to make one up for you. You can find your nearest dealer here: https://shop.stihl.co.uk/pages/dealer-locator
Thanks, STIHL GB
So trying to get to the bottom of this issue and have discovered the following.
From an old Stihl book at my local supply Bar 3002 000 9223 takes a 75 link chain 1.6mm and 3/8th pitch.
I was able to order this chain as a loop from an online supplier.
As the bar was one I had acquired more than 10 years ago I was not familiar with it.
I tried fitting the bar and chain to an 038 that had a 38th sprocket.
The first thing I noticed is that the bar has a slot that is 14mm wide. Reading about Duromatic bars, they apparently only fit 880 saws that I assume have larger bar receiver lugs.
Another supplier has said that they think that it is also a 404 bar and should not be fitted with a 404 chain.
I would be interested in your thoughts.
Also is there a 3/8th bar that will take a 75 link chain.
Thanks Martin
Hi Martin, we’ve emailed you with a section from our 2019 guide that shows all the approved guide bar and chain combinations for our 038 chainsaw. Unfortunately, we don’t stock a 3/8” guide bar that will fit a 75-drive link chain, but chain length can be adjusted by a STIHL Approved Dealer. Many thanks, STIHL GB
