Fuel from garage forecourts contain all sorts of ingredients. Alkanes make up approximately 40-45% of the formulation, and then a number of other components are added. This is not the case for alkylate fuels such as STIHL MotoMix (premixed fuel for 2 stroke petrol engines) and STIHL Moto4Plus (neat fuel for 4 stroke engines.)
These STIHL fuels contain almost nothing apart from paraffins which are an alkylate, with some added STIHL HP Ultra engine oil in the case of STIHL MotoMix. The advantages for using an alkylate fuel are two-fold; it’s better for you and the environment around you, and it’s better for the engine. Here’s why….
Why Use Alkylate Fuel?
The emissions produced by the use of alkylate fuels are significantly less harmful than those from traditional fuel, as they have far fewer additives and are mostly benzene free. Alkylate fuels also contain significantly less aromatics and produce up to 20% less carbon monoxide emissions.
As they are alkylate fuels, STIHL MotoMix and Moto4Plus are much cleaner burning and contain significantly fewer harmful compounds such as sulphur, benzene, and aromatics, which can cause dizziness, headaches, fatigue and irritated airways. That’s why we often read on the forums that users who have made the switch to STIHL fuels often feel a little better after doing so.
So, if you’re using a handheld petrol tool, it’s easy to see why using a premium fuel and investing in your health and the environment around you is a clear advantage. But what about the tool?
STIHL Alkylate Fuel
STIHL MotoMix is designed for STIHL engines and is patented to be the best formulation for a STIHL machine. It is designed to have the best starting characteristics and faster acceleration up to working speed. It’s also been formulated to have the best engine protection, lubrication, and clean burning properties by using our premium 2-stroke engine oil, HP Ultra. Whilst it is formulated for STIHL machines, it can certainly be used in other 2-stroke petrol machines.
STIHL alkylate fuels have a shelf life of up to 5 years when stored unopened in the original container in a cool and dry environment, meaning fewer trips to the garage forecourt are needed. They can be bought in 1 or 5 litre bottles, as well as in 50 and 200 litre drums, ideal for professional users who use a lot of fuel on a daily basis.

It’s almost impossible to find stihl motomix, I’m mixing stihl hp ultra with aspen 4 and I feel it might be a better option as aspen has a longer storage life than motomix. Can you comment on that seeing as stihl approves the use of aspen in their machines?
Hi, thanks for your comment. STIHL MotoMix has a 5 year shelf life, which is the same as Aspen. Have you seen something that suggested differently? Motomix is in high demand right now but should be available at a high number of dealers throughout GB. If you drop an email to enquiries@stihl.co.uk we should be able to help you find a local dealer near to you that has some in stock? Thanks, STIHL GB
My local stihl agent advised me buy best fuel premix even though he advertises as selling stihl . Premix . The saw is harder started . Basically he disappoints me ..
Also very disappointed in the 362 saw i purchased . No balls compared to the 261 .
Hi Denis, sorry to hear you are disappointed. We would always recommend using STIHL MotoMix with all STIHL petrol tools. If you feel the fuel you have purchased is affecting the performance of your machine, we suggest draining the fuel and refilling it with MotoMix.
Sorry to hear you are disappointed with the 362, if there are any specific issues or queries, please contact our customer services team at enquiries@stihl.co.uk who will be more than happy to help.
Thanks,
STIHL GB.
